2001. 1550th ANNIVERSARY OF AVARAYR BATTLE

G. Khanjian (1926-2000), Vardanank. Gobelen 5.40x6.75 (fragment) Avarayr battle took place on 26 May 451, nearby Avarayr village, between Armenian rebels and Persian army. Armenians retreated far inland in order to carry on the struggle. Persian Court had to recall the army from Armenia and admit her internal self-government. Vardan Mamikonian (388-451) was one of the leaders of Armenian national-liberation movement. He restored the downtrodden rights and privileges of Armenian aristocracy and clergy. In 451 Vardan Mamikonian heroically perished in Avarayr Battle.

Lake Sevan lies at the eastern part of Armenia. It is one of the largest sweet mountainous lakes of the world. Water level before the artificial fall was 1916 of height, the surface was 1416 km2, the length was 75 km, and the middle depth was 41.3 m.
Spandarian reservoir is situated in Sisyan region, on Vorotan River. It is 73 m of depth. The surface of the reservoir is 10.8 km2.

The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of ancient churches of the Christian Armenia. It is called Apostolic because it was founded in the first century A.D. by Thaddeus and Bartholomew preachings. During 293-301 the Christianity was spread in the kingdom of Great Hayk through the efforts of king Trdat and Gregory illuminator. In 301 the Christianity was proclamed as a state religion of Armenia. .

Hovhannes Lazarian (1735-1801) was the great industrialist and an eminent figure of the national liberating movement. He was established the Lazarian Academy in Moscow, the school of maids in Tsarskoye Selo, Armenian churches in Moscow and Peterburg and metallurgical factories in Russia.

International Wushu Federation (IWUF) associates with the federations of 83 countries. It involves also an Armenian Traditional Wushu Federation, which has been established in 1993. The 6th World Wushu Championships will be organized in Yerevan from 31 of October to 4 of November. 41 sets of medals for 2 kinds of Wushu will be presented among the sportsmen from more than 60 countries of the world.

The various types of carts: carts with two wheels, four wheels and even the carts with spokes were found in Armenian territories (Nerkin Getashen, Lchashen) of bronze century. In Syunik mountain range there was discovered the image of the cart on the rock, which belonges to the 13-14th centuries B.C. Phaeton is the one of the types of carriages, which has an openning roof. The first phaeton in Armenia was produced by Leninakanžs factory in 20th of 20th century. From Russia the tyres were imported there, because the factory could not produce the all needed materials.

Hypericum perforatum belongs to the Hypericum family. It has deep bushes with completely opposed leaves. It is known about 300 types of hypericums. It is used as a medicine to prevent wounds, skin diseases and the inflammation. Thymus serpyllum belongs to the Lipflower family. It has opposed, rigid, small leaves and pleasant smell. There are 10 types of thymuses in Armenia, but the Transcaucasian and Birch types are used frequently. Thymus is used as a medicinal plant as well as a spice.
