8 October 1997. The 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Rouben Mamulian

 Rouben Mamulian (1897-1987) - an outstanding Armenian film-director - was born on 8th October, 1897 in Tiflis, in Armenian family. He went down in history of cinema as an innovator, whose technical innovations in sound, colour psychology and camera movement are in use till now. The most famous films directed by Rouben Mamulian are "Applause", "City Streets", "Queen Christina", "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" etc.

17 October 1997. THE WORLD PHILATELIC EXHIBITION MOSCOW'97

 The Cathedral of St.Basil the Blessed (originally it was called Pokrovski Cathedral) is one of the most significant monuments of Russian architecture. It is placed in Moscow, on Red Square and was built in 1550-60. In 1558 the small cathedral of St.Basil the Blessed and in 1670 the bell-tower were overbuilt to the main Cathedral. The north-western church of Cathedral is devoted to St.Gregory the Illuminator in honour of help of Armenians which was given during conquest of Kazan.

Hayk and Bel is an ancient Armenian legendary story. According to it Hayk was the ruler of Ararad (Ararat) country. According to the legend, Armenians were descended from Hayk and the country where he was living in was called Hayk too. As forefather of Armenians, Hayk is in close correlation with stars, preserving the primary signs of the legendary cosmic hero. The constellation Orion was called Hayk among Armenians.

 The song of Vahagn is an ancient Armenian legendary song. Vahagn is the god war, bravery and victory in ancient Armenian mythology. In some sources and legends is testified as the god of sun. The old idea of ancient Armenians about perpendicular three-parted construction of world (sky, earth and sea) is represented in song. In such space structure is shown the birth and appearance of young god. The constellation Hercules was called Vahagn among Armenians.

19 October 1997. 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF EGHISHE CHARENTS

Eghishe Charents (Soghomonian) - an outstanding Armenian poet, publicist, translator and culture worker. Serving in the Red Army during the most active period of his life, Charents took part in the Russian Civil War and in several popular uprisings in Armenia. These surroundings were the cause of his revolutionary sentiments, which have been traced in all poetic works of Charents. The patriotic lyrics of Charents occupy one of the important parts of his poetry. In many works he broached the subjects of his country, history and people.

 Iris lycotis - this species is very rare in Armenia. It may be found only in the vicinity of Darelegis.
Iris lycotis is a decorative flower. The period of blossoming is early spring.
Iris lycotis is included in the Red Data Book of Armenia
Iris elegantissima - this species was widely distributed in the Ararat foundation area in the past. Nowadays the area of irises is distinctly reduced. It may be found in the vicinity of Shirak and Yerevan. Iris elegantissima is a decorative flower and very important material for selection of irises. The period of blossoming is end of April and beginning of May. In the nature this species gives a wonderful diversity of shapes and coloration.
Iris elegantissima is included in the Red Data Book of Armenia.
