In this monograph by Prof. V.M. Haroutyunian, Doctor of Medical Sciences, the aspects of clinical, experimental and morphological interrelations at thyroid gland and insular apparatus damage are elucidated. It was found that the tolerance to hydrocarbons at diffuse toxic goiter was reduced being dependent on functional activity of insular and counterinsular systems: latent insufficiency of the insular apparatus was detected. On the basis of data on absorption of an of 131-I, conversion index, Holden's basal metabolism and total iodine of blood and other factors the author has distinguished two forms of diabetes mellitus that depend on hyperfunction and hipofunction of thyroid gland.
